THEME:

One Health Through the Lens of Genetics: Bridging Species and Ecosystems

ORGANISED BY:

Persatuan Genetik Malaysia (Genetics Society of Malaysia)

CONFERENCE MANAGER:

WMIT Group Sdn Bhd

BACKGROUND

The 17th Malaysia International Genetics Congress (MiGC17) 2027 brings together researchers, academics, healthcare professionals, industry experts, policymakers and emerging scientists to explore how genetics and genomics can contribute to a more integrated understanding of health across humans, animals, plants, microbes and the environment.

Guided by the theme “One Health Through the Lens of Genetics: Bridging Species and Ecosystems,” MiGC17 highlights the important role of genetics in addressing complex and interconnected global challenges. From the emergence of infectious diseases and genetic disorders to sustainable food production, biodiversity conservation and ecosystem resilience, advances in genetics and genomics are increasingly central to understanding the relationships that shape the health of our planet.

Through interdisciplinary scientific exchange, MiGC17 aims to encourage collaboration across traditionally separate fields and promote innovative genetic and genomic approaches that support the One Health concept — recognising that the health of humans, animals and ecosystems is deeply interconnected.

MiGC17 provides a platform for scientists from diverse disciplines to exchange knowledge, establish collaborations and explore how genetics can bridge the boundaries between species, disciplines and ecosystems.
By bringing together discoveries from medicine, biomedicine, agriculture, biodiversity, wildlife and environmental sciences, MiGC17 seeks to advance genetic knowledge towards a healthier and more sustainable future for people, animals and the planet.

The scientific programme is organised into three major tracks:

Track 1: Health and Disease
This track focuses on advances in human, animal and microbial genetics that improve our understanding of health, disease mechanisms, disease susceptibility and emerging health threats.
Topics may include genetics and genomics of human diseases, precision medicine, cancer genetics, rare and inherited disorders, pathogen genomics, infectious disease evolution, host–pathogen interactions, antimicrobial resistance, molecular diagnostics, pharmacogenomics and emerging genomic technologies.

Track 2: Food, Agriculture and Bioresources
This track explores how genetics and genomics can contribute to sustainable agriculture, food security and the responsible utilisation of biological resources.
Areas of interest include crop and livestock genetics, molecular breeding, agricultural biotechnology, genomic selection, plant and animal disease resistance, food genomics, aquaculture, microbial and bioresource genetics, climate-resilient agriculture and innovative genetic approaches for sustainable food production.

Track 3: Biodiversity, Ecosystems and the Future
This track highlights the role of genetics and genomics in understanding, protecting and sustaining biodiversity and ecosystems in a rapidly changing world.
Topics may include conservation genetics, population genomics, environmental DNA, metagenomics, evolutionary genetics, wildlife genetics, microbial diversity, ecosystem genomics, species adaptation, climate-change resilience and genomic approaches for biodiversity monitoring and conservation.

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Congress cordially invites academics, practitioners, scholars, researchers, and policymakers from government agencies to present oral or poster papers at MiGC17. Interested participants are encouraged to register and submit their abstracts online via:

http://submit.confbay.com/conf/migc17

All submitted abstracts will undergo blind peer review by the Scientific Committee. Authors of accepted abstracts will be required to submit a full paper (if interested in publication), which must include the following sections:

Title, author(s), affiliations and email addresses, abstract, introduction, methodology, results and discussion, conclusion, acknowledgements, and references.

Manuscripts must be prepared in Times New Roman, font size 12, with single spacing, and should not exceed 15 pages, including tables and figures.

To cultivate a strong scientific culture among the next generation, the Congress strongly encourages postgraduate students worldwide to present their research. A discounted registration fee will be offered to support their participation.

CONGRESS TRACK:

Health and Disease

The
Health and Disease track explores how genetics and genomics can advance understanding, prevention, diagnosis, surveillance and treatment of diseases affecting humans, animals and their shared environments. Aligned with the One Health approach, this track recognises that health challenges are interconnected across species and ecosystems through zoonotic diseases, emerging pathogens, antimicrobial resistance, microbiomes and environmental influences.

The track highlights the genetic and molecular basis of both communicable and non-communicable diseases, including inherited disorders, cancer, metabolic and neurological diseases, as well as infectious and zoonotic diseases. It also examines how pathogen genomics, host–pathogen interactions and evolutionary genetics can improve understanding of disease emergence, transmission, virulence and cross-species spread.

Topics include human and clinical genetics, genomic medicine, precision health, pharmacogenomics, pathogen genomics, antimicrobial resistance, microbiome research, molecular diagnostics, gene and cell-based therapies, genome editing, bioinformatics and emerging genomic technologies.
By integrating expertise from human, animal, microbial and environmental sciences, this track promotes interdisciplinary genetic and genomic solutions to improve health outcomes, strengthen disease surveillance and enhance preparedness for current and future health threats.

Food, Agriculture and Bioresources

This track explores how genetics and genomics can contribute to sustainable agriculture, food security and the responsible utilisation of biological resources within the One Health framework. It recognises that resilient agricultural systems are essential not only for food production, but also for protecting animal health, human wellbeing and environmental sustainability.

The track will highlight how genetic and genomic technologies can improve crop and livestock productivity, enhance disease resistance, support climate adaptation and strengthen the sustainability of food and bioresource systems. Advances in molecular breeding, genomic selection and agricultural biotechnology are creating new opportunities to develop resilient crops, healthier livestock and more efficient production systems while reducing environmental impact.

Areas of interest include crop and livestock genetics, molecular breeding, agricultural biotechnology, genomic selection, plant and animal disease resistance, food genomics, aquaculture genetics, microbial and bioresource genetics, climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable resource management.
By integrating genetics with agriculture, food science, and environmental stewardship, this track aims to promote innovative solutions that strengthen food-system resilience, optimise biological resources, and support a more secure, sustainable, and healthy future for people, animals, and ecosystems.  Ultimately, this track provides a collaborative platform for scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders to design integrated strategies that protect planetary health while ensuring global food security.

Biodiversity, Ecosystems and the Future

This track highlights the role of genetics and genomics in understanding, protecting and sustaining biodiversity and ecosystem resilience in a rapidly changing world. It recognises that the health of species, populations and ecosystems is fundamental to the One Health framework, particularly as biodiversity loss, climate change, habitat degradation and environmental pressures increasingly influence the stability of natural systems and the wellbeing of humans and animals.

The track will explore how genetic and genomic approaches can reveal patterns of diversity, adaptation, population structure and evolutionary change, while supporting evidence-based conservation and ecosystem management. Emerging tools such as environmental DNA (eDNA), metagenomics, population genomics and ecosystem genomics are transforming the way biodiversity is monitored and understood across terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments.

Topics include conservation genetics, wildlife genetics, evolutionary genomics, microbial diversity, species adaptation, climate-change resilience, environmental genomics, ecosystem health and genomic approaches for biodiversity monitoring and conservation.
By integrating genetics with ecology and environmental science, this track aims to advance innovative strategies for conserving biological diversity, strengthening ecosystem resilience and safeguarding the natural systems that support the health of people, animals and the planet.

The congress also welcomes submissions from other relevant areas beyond the topics listed above.
